"eastern parts of the Prairies have received about 20-50 millimetres of rainfall"...
Try 30-40 cm of COLD WET SNOW, a real mess, just where only 30% was seeded in 2010. Extremely BAD news for a small area.
It's still not melting with day time high temps below freezing. More precip forecast will further delay seeding hopes, already well into May.
Such extremes in a few hundred miles.

Comment on China to partially lift ban on Canadian canola: trade by Andrew Wood

Canadian canola farmers should be rejoicing at the news of this partial lifting of restrictions. China is arguably the largest and most important trading country on earth. In today’s increasingly globalized and interconnected world, the ability to do business with one of its biggest players is almost certainly a sign of good times on the horizon for canola harvesters. However, we must not forget about the need for certain things here at home. Continued innovation as well as continual research and preventative measures in regards to the blackleg fungal disease will ensure that changes in the demand for canola do not destroy the farmers who rely on it so heavily. The last thing I would personally want to see is a generation of canola farmers and their families ruined for leaning heavily on a single buyer. What if the demand shifts drastically? What if a cheaper alternative is discovered? Are we prepared to deal with the societal impacts of a contracted market, specifically the market for Canadian canola oil? The optimism of this article needs to be supplemented by an awareness of the fact that family’s livelihoods are in the balance here, and to rely on a positive futures projection and visions of an insatiable canola market without any thought to domestic impact is just plain irresponsible. My hope is that steps are being taken to ensure that this entrance into the Chinese market resembles a carefully planned investment instead of a crazed gold rush.

This is a sad day in Canada, all for the love of money! I pray Mad Cow disease runs rampant and the Phillipines shut their doors once again. That would be a far better fate for these poor animals then what they are about to endure.

Forcing farmers to sell their products to the Wheat Board and not allowing them to access the open market sounds more like the old Soviet Union than Canada. Its time to ditch this ridiculous requirement and allow free enterprise to prevail..

The only reason this aging facility is of no use to them any more is because the have run it into the ground without any improvement or upgrades. There has been at least six managers over ten years who have not had a chance to work with the costumers. If Sheldon Spearman thinks that farmers "will not be impacted by this change" he is gravely mistaken , two months before seeding and we find ourselves without an ag supplier is very stressful !!!
