Record wildfires top Environment Canada weather stories of 2023
Record wildfires claimed the top spot of Environment Canada’s weather stories for 2023, as the entire country felt the impacts of the blazes burning in many areas during the summer.
Tragically, several firefighters died on duty, homes burned to the ground, and a record total of woodland—seven times the yearly average—was destroyed. Human-caused climate change was affecting the frequency, duration, and intensity of many climate-related hazards and disasters around the world, including in Canada.
Working together to reduce risk from the changing climate will keep Canadians and their communities safer and healthier, said Environment Canada.
