WINNIPEG, April 5 (MarketsFarm) – The following is a glance at the news moving markets in Canada and globally.

– Daily COVID-19 cases in India surpassed 100,000 for the first time during the pandemic on Monday, with 12.6 million total infections now reported in the country. Health experts blamed easing restrictions on the resurgence, with a new ‘double mutant’ variant also being found in the country.

– Prince Hamzah of Jordan, the estranged half-brother of King Abdullah II, was put under house arrest over the weekend facing charges that he had been involved with a plot to destabilize the government. Hamzah was stripped of his formal title in 2004 and has long been a vocal critic of the monarchy. In an audio recording Hamzah said he would disobey orders to not communicate with the outside world.

– Videogame retailer GameStop Corp. plans to sell up to US$1 billion worth of stock in an effort to capitalize on renewed interest in the company and fast-track a shift to e-commerce. GameStop had seen share prices jump sharply earlier in the year amid a social media fueled push from retail investors who had noticed that hedge funds were heavily short the company.
