Global Markets: Economic growth slows in United Kingdom

WINNIPEG, Feb. 11 (CNS Canada) – The following is a glance at the news moving markets in Canada and globally.

– Economic growth in the United Kingdom slowed to only 1.4 per cent on an annual basis in 2018, according to the Office for National Statistics. That compares with 1.8 per cent the previous year and marks the lowest growth rate since 2012.

– The United States and China are set to hold another round of trade talks in Beijing this week. While the fact the two countries are talking is supportive for the financial and commodity markets in general, they also still remain divided on a number of issues.

– A mass invasion of dozens of hungry polar bears on the remote archipelago of Novaya Zemlya in Russia has forced administrators in the region to declare a state of emergency. A team of specialists has been brought in to help deal with the problem.
