Global Markets: Freed Iranian tanker on route to Greece

By MarketsFarm

WINNIPEG, Aug. 19 (MarketsFarm) – The following is a glance at the news moving markets in Canada and globally.

– An Iranian oil tanker seized in early July is now on its way from Gibraltar to Greece. The vessel, carrying 2.1 million barrels of oil, was originally seized by the British Royal Marines due to allegations it was carrying oil bound for Syria – which would be against European Union sanctions.

– The United States government will give China’s Huawei Technologies a 90-day extension to purchase supplies from U.S. companies, U.S. Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross said on Monday. The extension “is intended to afford consumers across America the necessary time to transition away from Huawei equipment, given the persistent national security and foreign policy threat,” according to a statement.

– Argentina’s economy minister Nicolas Dujovne resigned over the weekend. A financial crisis in the country has seen its currency drop sharply relative to the U.S. dollar over the past week. The economic turmoil came as President Mauricio Macri lost a primary election to his left-wing challenger, Alberto Fernandez.
