Global Markets: Iranian ship attacked

WINNIPEG, April 7 (MarketsFarm) – The following is a glance at the news moving markets in Canada and globally.

– An Iranian cargo ship that is believed to be a base for the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps was attacked on Tuesday, sustaining minor damage, according to reports. Iranian officials said the MV Saviz was a non-military vessel that acts as a logistics station in the Red Sea to aid in anti-piracy activities. The attack came just as Iran and other world powers met in Vienna to discuss the potential of the United States rejoining the international nuclear deal with Iran.

– The Ontario government will impose a province-wide stay-at-home order and close non-essential businesses in an effort to slow a third-wave of COVID-19. The new measures are reportedly set to go into effect on Thursday, April 8. Premier Doug Ford is expected to make the official announcement later today.

– Anti-coup protests continue in Myanmar, with nearly 600 people killed over the past two months, according to unverified reports out of the country. Troops reportedly fired at protestors at a number of locations on Wednesday, with explosions also reported around the country. Arson attacks at a number of Chinese factories were also reported, as China was viewed as a supporter of the military junta. Myanmar’s democratically elected leader, Aung San Suu Kyi remains in detention. The military has said it may extend a state of emergency for another two years.
