Global Markets: Iranians protest government

– Iranian protestors have taken to the streets to express their outrage against the country’s clerical rulers. The protests were triggered by the government acknowledgement that the military accidentally shot down a passenger plane, killing all 176 on board. Riot police were facing down the protestors, with unconfirmed reports of live gunfire.

– The British Royal Family is holding a family summit at the Queen’s estate at Sandringham to discuss plans by Prince Harry and his wife, Meghan – also known as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex – to step back from royal duties. Meghan is already in Canada with their son, Archie, and will reportedly join the meeting by phone.

– The Academy Awards nominations were announced Monday morning, with Joker claiming the most nominations at 11 – including best picture and best actor for Joaquin Phoenix. The Irishman, 1917, and Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood follow with 10 nominations each. The other best picture candidates include Ford v Ferrari, Jojo Rabbit, Little Women, Marriage Story, and Parasite.
