Global Markets: Some cruise passengers out of quarantine

By MarketsFarm

WINNIPEG, Feb. 19 (MarketsFarm) – The following is a glance at the news moving markets in Canada and globally.

– Early Wednesday morning, hundreds of passengers were allowed to disembark a cruise ship docked in Japan. At least 621 passengers of the Diamond Princess have tested positive for the COVID-19 coronavirus, along with 43 Canadians. Health officials allowed passengers with negative tests to disembark, totaling approximately 500 people. The Japanese government has been criticized over the decision to keep passengers aboard the ship, as some have called it “a perfect virus incubator.”

– founder Jeff Bezos has pledged US$10 billion to the fight against climate change. As the richest person in the world, that is less than 10 per cent of his total wealth. Instead of supporting organizations that already exist, Bezos is throwing his money into The Bezos Earth Fund. The organization will, according to an Instagram caption, “fund scientists, activists, NGOs [nongovernmental organizations] — any effort that offers a real possibility to help preserve and protect the natural world…” In the past, Bezos has cited environmental concerns as the driving force behind his space company, Blue Origin, which aims to resettle millions of people in space.

– United States Democratic Presidential Candidates will take the stage again tonight for a debate. Billionaire and former New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg was a late qualifier for the night’s debate, joining Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders, Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren, Minnesota Senator Amy Klobuchar, former U.S. Vice President Joe Biden, and Former South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg. Some candidates have argued that Bloomberg has “[bought] his way on to television,” according to CNN. The debate is ahead of the Nevada caucus, which is a more racially diverse state battleground than the previous Iowa caucus and New Hampshire primary.
