Global Markets: Trump facing impeachment a second time

By MarketsFarm

WINNIPEG, Jan. 11 (MarketsFarm) – The following is a glance at the news moving markets in Canada and globally.

– United States President Donald Trump was on the verge of being impeached for a second time as Democrats will introduce the articles of impeachment in the House of Representatives on Monday. It’s been alleged that Trump encouraged what has been widely described as an attempted coup on Jan. 6 that wrought chaos on Capitol Hill. The violence killed five people including a police officer. Trump’s term officially ends on Jan. 20 when former Vice-President Joe Biden will be sworn in.

– The RCMP in Alberta are investigating the death of a worker at Cargill’s meat plant in High River. The teenage daughter of the worker filed a complaint with the local detachment on Jan. 8, alleging criminal negligence. The teen’s father died from COVID-19 on May 7. The investigation is the first in Canada of a workplace death due to COVID-19.

– The Supreme Court of India criticized the country’s federal government for failing to resolve the ongoing protests by tens of thousands of farmers who are angry over agricultural reforms. The farmers fear the reforms, which open up India’s tightly controlled agricultural sector, will benefit large operations at the expense of the country’s numerous small farms. There have been eight rounds of negotiations between the government and farmers with each round ending at an impasse. A ninth round has been scheduled for Jan. 15.
