Global Markets: U.S. confirms open-ended stay in Afghanistan

Aug. 22 (CNS Canada) – The following is a glance at the news moving markets in Canada and globally.

– United States President Donald Trump reaffirmed U.S. military commitments to Afghanistan yesterday, by not setting a withdrawal date for American troops. A rapid exit, he said, would cause more harm than good.

– With statistics from the Canadian government showing the number of illegal migrants entering Canada from the United States more than tripled in July to 3,100 people, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made it clear there would be no immigration advantage for those who do not follow set out procedures.

– Japan is pressing the world to maintain pressure on North Korea and its missile program. Japan Foreign Minister Taro Kono said worldwide pressure must be brought to bear on North Korea until it abandons its nuclear program.
