Global Markets: U.S. nears three million COVID-19 cases

WINNIPEG, July 8 (MarketsFarm) – The following is a glance at the news moving markets in Canada and globally.

– Confirmed COVID-19 cases in the United States neared three million in the latest data from Johns Hopkins, with over 131,000 deaths in the country attributed to the virus. A record number of new U.S. cases were reported on Tuesday. In Canada, the infection rate is slowing, with 108,000 confirmed cases and 8,765 confirmed deaths so far.

– Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador will meet with U.S. President Donald Trump in Washington, D.C., today, marking the first official meeting between the two leaders. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was also invited to Washington to celebrate the new North American trade deal, but declined.

– At least 239 people have died in Ethiopia as violence broke out in the country over the past week following the murder of a popular singer. Haacaaluu Hundeessaa, 36 and a member of the Oromo ethnic group, was shot dead by unknown assailants on June 29. His death sparked ethnic tensions and led to protests in Addis Ababa and the surrounding region.
