Glacier FarmMedia MarketsFarm – The following is a glance at the news moving markets in Canada and globally.

  • Unionized workers in Argentina launched a general strike against President Javier Milei and his libertarian policies on Thursday. Calling out Milei’s austerity measures, workers in the transportation sector, grain and oilseed processing, airports, banks, and other sectors all took part in the protest.

  • The United States will not supply offensive weapons to Israel, said President Joe Biden on Wednesday, as the conflict in Gaza intensifies and Israel reportedly moved closer to staging an all-out attack on Rafah. Meanwhile, the first shipment of humanitarian aid from the U.S. to a newly built floating pier off the Gaza coast reportedly left a port in Cyprus.

  • Weekly jobless claims in the U.S. hit their highest level in more than eight months, according to the latest report from the Labor Department. The softening economic data was seen as adding to expectations for interest rate cuts from the U.S Federal Reserve later this year.
