Winnipeg, January 30 – The Canadian dollar opened stronger against
its US counterpart on Thursday, underpinned by stronger-than-expected
Canadian economic data, industry watchers said.
According to Statistics Canada, weekly earnings of non-farm
payroll employees were up 0.9% to C$928 in November. Looking at the
year-over-year basis, weekly earnings were up 2.5%.
However, losses seen in commodities, including copper and gold,
limited any further gains.
At 8:32 CST Thursday, the Canadian dollar was at US$0.8958 or
US$=C$1.1163 which compares with Wednesday’s North American close of
US$0.8946, or US$=C$1.1178.
The TSX was up 11.25 points Thursday morning at 8:32 CST, to sit
at 13,654.47.
