Canadian Financial Close: Loonie rises, TSX still in descent

Glacier FarmMedia MarketsFarm – The Canadian dollar rose to its highest point in nearly two weeks on Tuesday.

The loonie closed at US$0.7250 or US$1=C$1.3794, compared to US$0.7216 or US$1=C$1.3858 on Friday. The Bank of Canada (BoC) did not publish a closing price on Monday due to the Civic Holiday.

The United States Dollar Index was up 0.26 of a point at 102.95.

Crude oil prices were higher on Tuesday. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) increased US$0.13 at US$73.07 per barrel. Brent crude oil was up US$0.06 at US$76.36/barrel.

The S&P/TSX Composite Index was still reeling from the weekend, losing 248.27 points at 21,979.36.

Gold was down US$14.90 at US$2,429.50 per ounce.
