Winnipeg, February 14 – The Canadian dollar was slightly weaker
against its US counterpart at midday Friday, undermined by
disappointing Canadian economic data, industry watchers said.
According to Statistics Canada, manufacturing sales were down 0.9%
in December, which was well below trade expectations of a flat reading.
It was also the decrease seen in sales since August 2013.
However, large gains seen by gold limited any further losses,
participants said.
At 11:30 CST Friday, the Canadian dollar was trading at US$0.9104
or US$1.0984, which compares with Thursday’s North American close of
US$0.9110, or US$=$1.0977.
At 11:30 CST Friday, the Toronto Stock Exchange was up 36.15
points to sit at 14,037.80.
