Winnipeg, August 7 – The Canadian dollar was weaker against its US
counterpart at midday Wednesday, undermined by disappointing Canadian
building permit data, industry watchers said.
According to Statistics Canada, the values of building permits in
June were down 10.3% from May, making it the first decrease in six
months. The report said most of the decline came from Quebec’s non-
residential sector and Ontario’s residential sector.
Gains in commodities, including gold and copper, limited the
loonie’s losses.
At 11:44 CDT Wednesday, the Canadian dollar was trading at
US$0.9603 or US$1.0413, which compares with Tuesday’s North American
close of US$0.9638, or US$=$1.0376.
At 11:44 CDT Wednesday, the Toronto Stock Exchange was down 48.79
points to sit at 12,420.53.
