Winnipeg, August 15 – The Canadian dollar was weaker against its
US counterpart at midday Thursday, undermined by strong US jobless
claims data, market watchers said.
According to the US Department of Labour, unemployment benefit
claims were down 15,000 during the week ended August 10 to a seasonally
adjusted 320,000. The seasonally adjusted rate is the lowest since
October 2007.
Gains seen in commodities, including gold and crude oil, limited
the loonie’s losses.
At 11:40 CDT Thursday, the Canadian dollar was trading at
US$0.9673 or US$1.0338, which compares with Wednesday’s North American
close of US$0.9682, or US$=$1.0328.
At 11:34 CDT Thursday, the Toronto Stock Exchange was down 13.30
points to sit at 12,626.00.
