B.C. expands Century Farms program

British Columbia’s ministry of agriculture and lands has expanded the selection criteria for its Century Farms program that honours the province’s earliest farms.
The program honours pioneers with a “Century Farm” designation for those whose farms or ranches have been in the family for 100 years or more. Unitl now, Century Farms were those with a minimum five acres (two hectares) owned by the immediate descendants of the original owners and operated as a farm or ranch at all times.
The new program offers new categories, such as farms or ranches that have been owned and operated by the same family for 100 years or more, but whose owners don’t now live on or operate the farm, or where the farm business has relocated but remains active. Farming institutes and industry associations that have been active for 100 years or more are also eligible for the honour.
