Farm Business Communications earns 11 at CFWF

Farm Business Communications came away with 11 national awards Saturday at the Canadian Farm Writers’ Federation awards banquet in Courtenay, B.C.

The Farm Business Communications division, based in Winnipeg and owned by Vancouver’s Glacier Ventures International, operates this website and is publisher of Country Guide, Grainews, Canadian Cattlemen, the Manitoba Co-operator, Alberta Farmer Express and Horses All.

Out of 42 awards in 14 categories, Farm Business Communications’ publications earned 11, including:

  • the gold Peter Lewington Award for technical features, to Tom Button, editor of Country Guide, for the article “7 benefits of off-farm investing”
  • the gold Jack Cram Award for monthly press reporting, also to Tom Button of Country Guide, for the article “Pioneer’s hybrid”
  • the gold Henry Heald Award, for World Wide Web sites, to Grainews editor Jay Whetter and daily news editor Dave Bedard for
  • the silver award for feature photography, to editor Laura Rance of the Manitoba Co-operator for a photo of a teacher using a dead bee to pollinate a canola plant as part of a demonstration at an Ag in the Classroom event (a photo which also won top prize in the “People” category at the International Federation of Agricultural Journalists’ recent awards in Austria)
  • the silver Jack Cram Award for monthly press reporting, to Country Guide associate editor Gord Gilmour for the article “Hot seat”
  • the silver Dick Beamish Award for press feature writing, to contributor Jeanine Moyer for her Country Guide article “When illness strikes”
  • the silver O.R. Evans Award for press editorials to Manitoba Co-operator managing editor Dave Bedard for “The poor pineapple’s burden”
  • the silver Peter Lewington Award for technical features, to associate editor Andrew Douglas of Country Guide for his article “The power principle”
  • the bronze Jack Cram Award for monthly press reporting, also to Andrew Douglas for his Country Guide article “Who’s next?”
  • the bronze Q.H. Martinson Award for weekly press reporting to Manitoba Co-operator reporter Ron Friesen, for his article “Good for farmers, but for how long?” and
  • the bronze John Phillips Award for news photography, to Winnipeg Beach, Man., freelance photographer Jennifer Botham, for her Manitoba Co-operator photo of hogs fleeing a raging barn fire in Manitoba’s Interlake.

Co-operator editor Laura Rance also earned the silver Frank Jacobs Award for press columns, for “Better returns… that’s good news, isn’t it?” which appeared in the Winnipeg Free Press.

The 2009 CFWF convention and awards banquet will be held next fall in Edmonton.
