Metro warehouse staff to strike: company

Grocery store chain Metro says it has a contingency plan in place to supply its stores in eastern Quebec after announcing that workers at its Quebec City grocery warehouse have voted to strike.

The company said it had been in talks with its workers’ union over the past two days with a mediator from the provincial labour ministry.

The company said it was “very surprised” by its employee representatives’ decision to call a strike while talks were underway on renewing a collective agreement.

“We would like to reach an agreement that will allow the company to remain competitive in an increasingly cutthroat market,” Metro’s vice-president of human resources, Alain Picard, said in a release Friday.
