Post-CWB review flags grain trade ‘inefficiency’

WITHDRAWN, April 15, 2016: A historian’s review of the Prairie grain trade, commissioned by supporters of the former single marketing desk for wheat and barley, suggests history is repeating itself at grain growers’ expense — but the data on which the review is based is now being questioned.
The Canadian Wheat Board Alliance on Wednesday released a new research paper by Laura Larsen, a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Saskatchewan, reviewing Prairie grain growers’ current grain marketing situation “within a historical context.”
Larsen’s research paper was briefly removed from the CWBA’s website Thursday. It was later reposted with a notice that some of its numbers — documenting what it said the Canadian Wheat Board paid each year for grain freight in the decade before the CWB lost its single desk — have been “called into question (and) may be revised later.”
Until the accuracy of that data can be confirmed, AGCanada.com has withdrawn its news report.
