Farmers report crop damage across Western Canada

Canadian Cop Hail Association – Farmers reported damage to multiple crops after storms produced pea-to-quarter size hail in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba, according to according to the Canadian Crop Hail Association.

The storms occurred June 20, 23, 24, 25, 27 and 28.

CCHA member companies are investigating about 100 claims of crop damage during the time period.

Darryl Tiefenbach, of Additional Municipal Hail, said farmers reported damaged to crops of all types after a storm produced pea-to-quarter size hail in Saskatchewan. The storms hit the communities of Beechy, Lucky Lake, Wolsley, Indian Head and Neudorf.

He said wind damage is a factor in adjusting.

Scott McQueen, of Palliser Insurance Company, said farmers reported light to heavy damage to multiple crops after a storm dropped half-inch hail in Saskatchewan and Alberta. The storms hit Beechy in Saskatchewan and areas of northern and southern Alberta.

“We are seeing light damage to cereals and damage to both canola and peas,” he said. “We are working on the June 13th storm in Alberta. We are seeing some heavy damage to some peas and light to medium damage on the Canola.”

Beth Shewkenek, of AG Direct Hail Insurance, said farmers reported crop damage in Alberta after a series of storms.

Murray Bantle, of Cooperative Hail Insurance Company, said farmers in Manitoba reported light to heavy damage to wheat, canola and beans. He said farmers in Saskatchewan reported light to heavy damage to cereals, canola and peas. The storms hit southern Manitoba from La Riviere Plum Coulee to Steinbach. In Saskatchewan, they hit the communities of Beechy, Borden, Lacadena, Nuedorf, Plenty, Swift Current.

Jackie Sanden, of Agriculture Financial Services Corporation, said farmers reported damage to crops after storms in Alberta. Details were not immediately available.
