Thunderstorms brought pea-to-toonie-sized hail to the Prairies from June 13 to 20, causing a wide swath of damage.

The Canadian Crop Hail Association said its member companies are investigating more than 900 claims of hail damage with the majority filed in Alberta and Saskatchewan.

“Thankfully most of the crops are in the early stages of development and can likely recover from hail damage,” said Tyson Ryhorchuk, CCHA president. “Most only sustained light to moderate damage from these storms.”

The crops damaged by the storms included wheat, canola, barley, lentils, peas, corn and oats.

More than 30 communities in Alberta impacted by hail, as were over 20 in Saskatchewan and nine in Manitoba.

The Agriculture Financial Services Corporation, Saskatchewan Municipal Hail Insurance and Manitoba Agricultural Services Corporation, as well as Rain and Hail Insurance Services and Co-operative Hail Insurance Company all reported claims.
